At the end of the 18th century, the first restaurants began offering secluded spaces, giving rise to the booth, the ancestor of the bench. In the United States, these booths were equipped with curtains for added privacy, raising concerns about hidden behaviors, which led to their ban in some states.
During Prohibition, booths gave way to high-back benches, which gradually evolved into the modern version we know today.
