KITCHEN PLAN LAYOUT

How a well-chosen trash can transform your kitchen every day

While choosing a trash bin may not be the most exciting part of a kitchen renovation, we believe that a well-designed waste management system can transform your daily routine. To help you find the solution that fits your lifestyle, we’ve put together a guide featuring the 5 essential steps used by our designers, complete with expert tips from Marie-Sophie, our organization and recycling specialist.

STEP 1: DEFINE YOUR NEEDS

To define your waste management needs, your designer will ask you a few key questions: do you separate your food waste? Do you use compost in your garden? How often do you go to the bin? Do you have children or pets? Do you buy in bulk? What are the local regulations? These factors, along with the size of your kitchen and your preferences, will guide the choice of your waste management system, including the size of the bins.

STEP 2: KITCHEN DIMENSIONS

When space allows, we prefer creating a 'waste center' with four sections: a trash bin, a compost bin, a recycling bin, and a small bin for bags and accessories. This organized and flexible system makes it easy to adjust the size of the bins according to your needs. For example, you might need a smaller trash bin when you start composting, or a larger compost bin during harvest season. The bins are available in different capacities (17, 26, or 32 liters) for added flexibility.

STEP 3: MANUAL OR ELECTRIC OPENING

The waste center drawer can be opened manually using a sliding system, or you can opt for a hands-free technology like SERVO-DRIVE. This feature allows you to open the drawer with a simple knee or foot motion, providing a convenient solution when your hands are dirty or full.

STEP 4: ADDITIONAL STORAGE

If the kitchen layout allows, an extra drawer can be added above the waste bins to store garbage bags, compostable bags, recycling bags, as well as table linens, sponges, and other household accessories. Our clients with pets especially appreciate this space for storing treats or dog waste bags!

STEP 5: ODOR CONTROL

To prevent unpleasant odors, all our waste bins come with a lid featuring a coconut-based odor filter, as well as two handles for easy transport and emptying. The coconut filters are not only easy to replace but can also be composted at the end of their life. These little details, in our opinion, make all the difference!

TIPS & TRICKS

To wrap up, here are some tips and tricks from our team:

  • Place the waste center near the sink, on the side closest to the food prep area.

  • Freeze your compost bags before putting them out on your scheduled collection day.

  • Opt for buying in bulk to minimize waste and recycling.

  • Opt for the automatic opening feature for your waste station a worthwhile investment!

  • Regularly wash your plastic bins with a small amount of baking soda to remove odors.
